Class Content

Overview

This course introduces participants to the fundamental concepts of effective communication in a law firm environment. It provides a pragmatic approach to understanding the needs of key audiences, particularly partners and clients, and crafting communications to meet those needs. It also provides participants with concrete techniques for honing their communication skills, including active listening, editing for conciseness and clarity, and anticipating and avoiding barriers to communication.  Participants get to apply these techniques in the context of real-world examples. The course exposes students to a range of common forms of communication, as well as cross-cultural considerations. Although the course focuses on transactional law, the concepts apply to most law firm settings.

Objectives

 Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:  

  • Understand the needs and expectations of partners and clients, and be able to customize their communication accordingly.
  • Optimize their communication through effective and respectful listening.
  • Communicate proactively.
  • Communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing.
  • Avoid the pitfalls of communication on social media and in public.
  • Communicating effectively with third-parties and clients in cross-cultural situations..

Simulation Exercise

Students are presented with an assignment from a partner, requiring them to prepare: (1) an email confirming receipt of the assignment, (2) an email requesting clarification, (3) an email providing a status update, (4) an email noting a problem and seeking assistance, and (5) an oral presentation on the project.
