Class Content

Overview

This course exposes students to a range of common forms of communication present in the modern law firm environment, from emails, texts, and chats to web-based calling systems such as Zoom. The course illustrates the characteristics of professional communication, both verbal and in writing. It also covers the art of crafting a professional email, irrespective of its purpose. The course identifies the appropriate contexts for text and chat in the workplace and raises important considerations about social media communication. The course identifies special communication considerations in an increasingly virtual world, including the importance of proactive communication, general expectations for timing and responsiveness, methods to connect and communicate with partners and peers in a work-from-home environment, and advice on working effectively with cross-country teams. The course concludes by discussing etiquette on web-based calling platforms.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing.
  • Avoid the pitfalls of communication on social media and in public.
  • Optimize your communication for the remote workspace.
  • Communicate proactively and in a timely manner.
  • Understand Zoom etiquette and how to maximize opportunities to connect and communicate in a remote work environment.

Simulation Exercise

Students are presented with an assignment from a partner, requiring them to prepare: (1) an email confirming receipt of the assignment, (2) an email requesting clarification, (3) an email providing a status update, (4) an email noting a problem and seeking assistance, and (5) an oral presentation on the project.
